10. Wake up the algorithm
7:28
You might be thinking this is great, but I have, my account's a bit dormant, or I've not been getting very much engagement.
How do I change that?
What can I do to get more engagement, more followers?
Or I'm going to go back to my account or I'm starting a brand new account.
What can I do?
So I just want to talk very briefly about how you can do what I call waking up the algorithm, and it can be worth doing this every six months or so anyway.
So a few quick tips, and you don't need any technical knowledge you don't really need to even understand the algorithm you just need to know there's an algorithm and sometimes you've got to prod it a little bit to get it to notice you again.
You need a bit of attention seeking so a few quick things to do.
If at any time you, and I'd say you need to do this seasonally anyway, but if at any time your engagement is low then one quick thing you can do is let the channel know that you're still there and a way of doing that is showing that you're updating your content but you're doing it in a deeper way.
So add a new header image, not necessarily your profile image because people might have got used to seeing that and looking for it.
But if you really have got very low engagement, then it won't matter if you do change that as well to something that's either more appropriate or maybe a different color because it stands out a little bit.
Have a look at a general feed and what it is that you notice and try to do something similar.
And also re edit your bio so that it's fresh and it's appropriate.
And, maybe just think about the keywords that you're using there.
So that can make a difference already and sometimes when you change your header image you find that people are liking that image.
Ask a question or do some kind of poll and this could be something which isn't really what you would normally do.
I've used the example to some of you before of a photo of an English a cooked English breakfast and at the top it just says which of these if you were to leave one thing out which of these would it be?
And people comment on that, they just can't help themselves.
So it is sort of related to tourism industry.
Well it is related but it might not be totally related to what you do.
But asking something or doing a quick poll about something that it has to be something of general interest, it can't be something where you're saying I might change my wallpaper do you like this one or that one?
If you don't have much engagement that is not going to alter it but you might you might do something, I don't know, you know, how you feeling right now, top of the world or other worlds a bit miserable isn't it, and just get a response.
It's not the only thing you need to do, but it's one of the things that you can do to just wake up and get a bit of response.
Think about something you've done in the past that was popular and redo it, but do use a different photo and slightly different wording because if you're trying to wake up the algorithm then you need to post fresh, content.
This isn't for everyone but perhaps there's something that you're thinking about that's slightly controversial.
I'm thinking more about, jam or cream first on scones or scones level rather than something political, but that might do the trick, but just be a bit careful.
And then these are the things that you should be doing anyway but can make a difference, so make sure you're commenting on other people's posts.
Bear in mind it's social media meant to be social, so if you've got some accounts, if it's an account where people have got hundreds of thousands of followers and you comment in their waste of time, you're going to be lost.
But if someone's got an account where there are a few a few thousands, followers and you comment on there then it's more likely your comment will be seen.
But just commenting that's beautiful doesn't help.
You need to comment with some additional information, something that gives people a little bit of knowledge or a tip they might have not otherwise have had.
And then if people do comment on your post, especially if they comment quite early, and, one thing I should have said is that when when you post something, if it's crickets, no one comments, no likes, no shares for the first couple of hours, then no one else will see that post.
If, however, you post something and you get a couple of comments instantly, then, the algorithm believes that that's going to be popular and therefore they show it to more people including non followers.
So you might get a friend or, maybe join together with a couple of other businesses where you all do this for each other, you comment early and then when someone comments if you comment back or a comment on their page, if they share something, then that's a good way of being social by encouraging people and by upping your comment count.
But again, make it relevant.
Okay.
Another thing you might want to think about is do you need to do a content sprint?
So this is where you sit down and make some really focused effort, put some time aside to just sort out content so that you don't have to do this later, and it just refreshes everything all in one go rather than doing a sort of a daily bit of this.
So you might, have done this anyway when you were creating your grid.
You're creating a list of photos and videos and you then just set out to take them all so you know that you've got that perfect bank of them.
This time of year, particularly good to do that.
Perhaps you need to go through your camera roll and look at some images that look really good and think about how you can use them.
Or maybe you take a topic and you scribble down as many ideas as you can in ten minutes.
You give yourself a very focused amount of time to do something just to brainstorm with yourself, or you go back to your most popular post and you think of related topics and ideas.
So quick content spirit is a condensed amount of time when you do something just to get your brain moving again.
Worth thinking about when people make decisions, won't be this won't be appropriate to everyone but by and large early in the week on a Monday we're all feeling a bit oh god another week of work, so you might want to talk about things people can look forward to and you're just doing some general awareness raising.
In the middle of the week, you might be starting to talk about, specifics about a place or a specific experience and then perhaps just before the weekend you're trying to encourage some last minute spontaneity and maybe over the weekend you're posting pictures of happy people or talking about things that people are loving doing to encourage FOMO.
Won't be relevant to everyone but you could use this and you might also want to think about seasonal content and what you need to post when and what could be most effective.
We'll move on in a moment some more strategic messaging which can help you maybe get more last minute bookings or

If your engagement isn't very strong, what can you do to wake up the algorithm and get noticed?
